INTRODUCTION TO ASHTANGA YOGA

Image
INTRODUCTION TO ASHTANGA YOGA In Sanskrit "Ashta + anga" is ashtanga. "Ashta" means Eight and "Anga" is limbs so it means Eight Limb path, Ashtanga yoga is based on Yoga Philosophy of Patanjali. The asanas, Pranayamas or the dharana which we have studied earlier or the yam and niyam are based on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Hence, we will acquaint ourselves with the fundamentals as stated by Patanjali first. HISTORY OF ASHTANGA YOGA Yoga has its roots about 5000 years BC as described in Vedic Philosophy and Tantras. Patanjali , great sage composed this path into a Darshan(Philosophy) in his Book Patanjal Yoga Sutra. In which he has formulated Yoga as a Eight Limbs or Eight Fold path. EIGHT LIMBS OF ASHTANGA YOGA Yama (Principles or moral code) Ahimsa - A principle of non-violence Satya - A principle of Truthfulness Asteya - A principle of non stealing Brahmacharya - Continence / Celibacy Aparigah - A principle of non-hoarding or non possessiveness Niyama...

Excerpt from: I AM THAT

Image
Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj  Excerpt from: I AM THAT  Inner Peace Whatever you may have to do, watch your mind. Also you must have moments of complete inner peace and quiet, when your mind is absolutely still. If you miss it, you miss the entire thing. If you do not, the silence of the mind will dissolve and absorb all else. An infant knows its body, but not the body-based distinctions. It is just conscious and happy. After all, that was the purpose for which it was born. The pleasure to be is the simplest form of self-love, which later grows into love of the self. Be like an infant with nothing standing between the body and the self.  The constant noise of the psychic life is absent. In deep silence the self contemplates the body. It is like the white paper on which nothing is written yet. Be like that infant, instead of trying to be this or that, be happy to be. You will be a fully awakened witness of the field of consciousness. But there should be no feelings and i...

The grass grows by itself and so is your consciousness

Image
๐Ÿง˜‍♀️ Real meditation is Zen, Vipassana. Real meditation is nothing but to sit silently, doing nothing. Just doing nothing, sitting silently, that is real meditation. There is no other technique, no technique at all in it. No mantra has to be repeated. No prayer has to be done, no God's name to be pronounced. You simply sit... but that is the hardest thing to do in the world. Looks so simple! When I say again and again: Sitting silently, Doing nothing, And the spring comes And the grass grows by itself... You think it is very easy: "We can sit and the spring will come and the grass will grow by itself." This is the hardest and the most difficult and the most arduous thing in the world: to sit silently, doing nothing. And this is the greatest meditation.... Real meditation is not a technique. Real meditation is just relaxing, sitting silently, letting it happen, whatsoever it is. Allowing the whole anxiety to come up, to surface. And watching it, watching it. A...

How to Measure Consciousness With the Map of Consciousness

Image
Can you measure consciousness? This question always fascinated me.  Before encountering the Map of Consciousness, the only methods of measuring one’s consciousness and spiritual growth I knew of were Monitoring your personal response to life  Verification from a highly evolved teacher or enlightened being Calibrating your experiences with the ones described in ancient texts Apparently there are also some machines that measure aura’s or energies, but I’m not sure this is quite the same as consciousness. I still think these can all be valuable methods, but they aren’t exactly easy and leave lots of ambiguity. For most people, the entire experience of trying to feel good all the time and grow spiritually is a winding and at times disorienting path. If we could treat consciousness and well-being like fitness, then people would have some barometer for how they’re doing and what they can do to improve. David Hawkins  Map of Consciousness  was the first thing I’d see...

MIND AND MEDITATION

Image
☀️ Mind and Meditation.  You have to understand a simple thing, that giving attention to thoughts is giving nourishment. If you don't give any attention but remain unconcerned, the thoughts start dying on their own. They don't have any other way to get energy, any other source of life. You are their energy, and because you go on giving them attention, seriously, you think it is very difficult to be free from thought. It is the easiest thing in the world, but it has to be done in the right way. The right way is just to stand by the side. The traffic goes on -- let it go. Don't make any judgment of good and bad; don't appreciate, don't condemn. That is what is meant by being easy. It is all okay. WITHOUT FORCING... and that is something that has to be remembered because by the very act of forcing them, you are giving them energy, you are giving them nourishment, you are taking note of them and you are making them important -- so important that without throwing them,...

The First Step is The Last Step

Image
Meditation is the most marvellous thing if you know the meaning of a mind that is in meditation—not how to meditate. If you see what meditation is not, you will know what meditation is. Through negation, you come upon the positive, but if you pursue the positive, it leads to a dead end.    We say meditation is not the practice of any system. You know, people who sit and become aware of their toes, of their bodies, of their movements, who practise, practise, practise. Systems cannot reveal the beauty and depth of the marvellous thing called meditation. Nor is meditation concentration. When you concentrate or attempt to concentrate, in that concentration, there is the observer and the observed. There is the one who says, ‘I must concentrate, I must force myself to concentrate,’ and so concentration becomes a conflict. When you learn to concentrate, like at school, that concentration becomes a process of exclusion, building a wall against thought with other movements ...
